For those who may be unsure, the drug maker is pleased to announce that the New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant Teva Pharmaceuticals has launched the first generic version of Pfizer’s Viagra, the world’s most famous drug. Viagra was first approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in 1998 and became one of the world’s top-selling drugs in 2009. Viagra, which Pfizer’s Viagra is currently available as a generic, will cost an average of $100,000 per tablet.
Viagra was the first of Pfizer’s patented sildenafil citrate patents to expire. The drug is a PDE5 inhibitor and works by blocking an enzyme that regulates blood flow to the penis. This patent allows Pfizer to create Viagra quickly, typically within an hour, with a low risk of side effects.
In addition to Viagra, Teva is pursuing a license to produce generic versions of the drug. These generic versions would contain sildenafil citrate as their active ingredient, which is sold under the brand name Viagra. However, Teva’s patent exclusivity ends in November 2021 and the generic version would cost an average of $70,000 per tablet.
In an email, Jeff Teplin, a Pfizer spokesperson, said: “To confirm that we are producing the generic Viagra, it is important to note that Teva is not seeking to supply an existing Generic Application, and its generic application has not yet been submitted.”
